Hair restoration for woman

All the advertisements and promotions for hair restoration look as if they are specifically aimed at men. Ofcourse most of them are because baldness is a very common problem with men and men like to get the hair restoration done.

However hairloss is a common problem in women too. But many do not realize that even women can be affected by baldness and that hair restoration works for even them. In fact it is great news for the women in US as one in every four women, experience female pattern baldness. Though it is not as common as in men, hair restoration in women is done with the same kind of processes available for men.

Steroid injections are used to increase the hair growth which is stopped because for various reasons. Though this could cause more bald patches, in some cases it gives good results. However these injections need to be given under strict medical care. Apart from these steroid injections, the hair restoration methods for male and female baldness patterns vary significantly.

The difference in the methods is of the density that a women needs is different from that of what a man needs generally. Also the reasons for male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness vary. Hence the process of hair restoration needs more care, more time and importantly, more skill.

Different treatments

One way to treat female pattern baldness is medicine. “Rogaine” is an FDA certified ingredient that has been quite helpful to treat women hair loss problems to a certain extent.

Surgery is another way of hair restoration treatment. It all depends on the severity of the baldness to choose what treatment works better.

Basically there are four different types of hair restoration surgery:

Transplantation:

The scalp is grafted along with the hair. This means that the part where the hair growth is healthy is in a way merged to a place where the hair is lost. This adds strength to that part of the scalp and results in hair growth.

Though this treatment sound theoretically fine, there some practical problems involved:

  1. The most important factor is time. It takes lots of time for a transplant specialist to graft the scalp and relocate it.
  2. The hair growth is slow in different areas, making the hair look ugly until the entire treatment is done.
  3. It is not 100% guaranteed way of hair restoration.

Tissue expansion:

A silicon strip (something like that is normally used in breast implants) called a tissue expander is placed in the scalp at an area where the health growth is still healthy. In one way this tissue expansion works with the same principle that transplants work.

This tissue expander is removed after few days and then merged at the bald spot. Hence hair grows normally again.

Scalp Reduction –

In this method the bald scalp is taken off and the hair growing area is pulled in to fill out this area. As the bald scalp is reduced, the healthy scalp takes its place making hair grow.

Flap Surgery –

Flap surgery is one of the most commonly used methods for restoration of hair in women. A large flap of haired skin is introduced to the bald portion. This gradually helps in hair growth.

With these options, women can choose the right one to go ahead with their plans of hair restoration with. However it is best advised to take a specialist’s opinion to choose what treatment suits you best.
